Letter from the Chair - April 2025

Meteorologically spring has arrived and with it the opening of the Club on Wednesday, April 16, which kicks off the start of sailing season. Bruce, Mike, and the staff are currently sprucing up the Club for the opening. Also, because of Easter this year, the club will be open for Easter dinner so make your reservation now. The Flag is putting the final changes on launch and CCS is gearing up for sailing lessons.
In 1978 the tradition of “burning the socks” to welcome spring was started by boat builder BobTurner, who after a snowy winter, bid his oppressive sock-wearing days farewell for the summer by throwing them into a campfire. What started as a one-off lighthearted act of defiance to welcome spring has come to represent a time to clear out the yacht club cobwebs and embrace spring. It says, “ Enough with the socks. Time to go sailing!” In the spirit of this tradition and being more environmentally conscience, we are asking you to celebrate by, instead of burning socks, bringing packages of new socks, any size and gender, to the Club from Wednesday, April 16 thru Sunday, May 4. The donated socks will be given to the St. Vincent de Paul Society for their clothing room.
When the Club opens on Wednesday, April 16 the Setting Sail Book Club will be having lunch at 12:30. Anyone interested in joining the ladies’ group is welcome. Launch will take place on Saturday, April 26 at 8:00 am and the first social event of the season will be on Saturday, May 10. A list of social events for the season is included in this mailing. If you have moved back to the area after your winter jaunt, make sure to let the Club Bookkeeper, Cheryl, know that your winter address is no longer valid.
As the month progresses, I am looking forward to sunny blue skies, warm weather, and another momentous year at my “chosen spot,” Canandaigua Yacht Club. I hope to see you all there either getting your boat ready, having a drink at the bar, or dining at the clubhouse. Do not forget to make reservations. Happy Spring!
