2008 RACE COMMITTEE VOLUNTEERS
WE
NEED YOU!!!
Would
you like to help run the sailboat races at Canandaigua?
Don’t
know how to, don’t worry, we will teach you!
Sailboat racing is an integral part of CYC. The organization
of a race requires a driver for the Race Committee (RC) boat, a driver and
assistant for the mark boat and a Principal Race Officer (PRO) who works with
2-3 additional people to set the race course and the start and finish
sequences. While the RC driver and the mark boat driver are paid employees of
the club, the PRO and the RC teams that set the races are traditionally been
made up of volunteers.
So what are the criteria for being a RC volunteer?
The skill you
need is a desire to learn and the ability to follow simple instructions, to
learn how to communicate with flags, to enjoy being out on
the water, to enjoy the
company of like-minded souls, and to be prepared for moments
of intense
activity as boats start or finish a race.
There is no mandatory obligation to
volunteer for the RC in 2008. BUT, if you value racing at CYC you are
encouraged to seriously consider giving of your time to helping out on the RC
boat. Over the years it is becoming more and more difficult to man the RC team;
we should not allow this time honored CYC tradition to erode away. As racers we
should help out, besides it is a learning experience to see the other side of
the race course.
In order for all the racing to be
covered we need to fill 124 RC volunteer slots - We need you!
If you are a new RC volunteer, or
would like a refresher, we request that you attend one of the
45 minute RC
volunteer training sessions:
